I feel like I should have liked this book. And it's not that I didn't like it, so much as that I just couldn't get into it. The world is fascinating and deep, the writing lush and lyrical, and the concept one that I enjoy on an intellectual level. And therein lies the problem, I think.

Sabriel has just about every element of my favourite books except the most crucial - a link to the characters. I honestly felt nothing about what happened to anyone. Sabriel, while interesting, was kind of bland. She didn't feel anything, or even really think anything - at least not so that we as readers could tell. As a result, I wasn't invested in the story.

I get why this book is so highly regarded, and that's great. If you like a more cerebral reading experience, or just a well-written book (which this really, really is - I can't emphasize that enough), then this is the book for you. If your enjoyment of a book is more character-driven, like it is for me, you might want to pass on this. Or maybe read it anyway, just because. I don't know.

Ambivalence, thy name is Sabriel.
