Oh my gosh, you guys! This book. THIS BOOK.

It's no secret that I love just about everything Seanan McGuire writes, but there's a reason for that. Her books are amazing, and this one's no exception. I don't even know where to start in unpacking the amazingness for you. I started reading it last night and actually lost track of time and the outside world until I was finished at I'm-going-to-fall-asleep-at-my-desk-tomorrow o'clock. Here goes.

I love the way each and every character is fully developed and articulated. From new friends like Mags the Librarian to old enemies like the Queen and everyone in between - they're all real. They don't exist for the plot's sake, but have agency and independence. May, Jazz, Danny, Sylvester, Etienne, Connor, the Ludaieg, Toby's mom, Walter, Dean, Maddie...I could keep going but I won't. I'm not very good with names, often having to look up those of the protagonists before writing a review, so the fact that I remember the names of so many supporting characters with ease speaks volumes.

I love the way the characters are growing with each new installment in the series, both as individuals and in their relationships with one another. Toby is much more well-adjusted this time around, though she still has a lot of baggage and an insanely high tolerance for caffeine. And the relationship between Toby and Tybalt made me so very, very happy. Quentin is now one of my favourite people-who-don't-really-exist, and we get some real insight into his character this time around.

The plot of Chimes at Midnight was immensely satisfying. [**spoilers ahead!!] Toby starts out trying to bring down the goblin fruit trade and ends up dethroning a queen, enthroning a princess, getting addicted to jam after being hit in the face with a pie, becoming almost entirely human, eating the Ludaieg's blood, staging a prison break, incurring a major debt to the Night Haunts, saving Tybalt's life...and you get the idea. Whew! Non-stop action. A lot of loose ends were tied up, and so many more possibilities were created. I can't wait to see where Ms. McGuire takes us next!
