(Book #5 of the Chronicles of Elantra series)
Rating: 🍁🍁🍁🍁
Cast in Silence serves as a microcosm for the series as a whole: full of interesting and complex characters, set in a lush world, and oh so very slow to get started. Then, after the first 100 pages or so, everything comes together in a story that had me trying to brush my teeth and read at the same time because I needed to get ready for bed but couldn't put it down. (Incidentally, I'm better at multi-tasking than I originally thought.)
This wasn't an easy journey for Kaylin, as we delved into the time between when she left the fief of Nightshade and her arrival at the Halls of Law. We also explored a new fief, Barren, and I loved, loved, loved what Ms. Sagara has done with Tiamaris. I also may have actually squee-ed in excitement when it was revealed who occupied the carriage after they entered the shadowstorm.
Even the magic sequences, which are usually where Ms. Sagara loses me, were mostly comprehensible this time around. My only complaint is that it took forever for anything to happen - the first part of the book felt like it dragged on forever, with no real purpose. It was well worth slogging through, though! I can't wait to see what happens next!
