I ordered this book from the library because of several excellent reviews from people who share my taste in books. Except the reviews were for a book that comes later in this series. This book? Not quite so excellent.

I'm hoping that this series will follow that same pattern as Michelle Sagara's Chronicles of Elantra, where the first book is rough and kind of slow because of all the character intros and world building going on, and each subsequent book gets better and better.

Which isn't to say that Rosemary and Rue wasn't an enjoyable read. I like the dark, gritty flavour of the world Seanan McGuire has created, and there seems to be a lot of potential for exciting happenings and colourful characters. But that's all it is at this point - potential. If I wasn't aware of those excellent reviews for the rest of the series, I probably wouldn't bother continuing.
