(Book #1 of The League series)
Rating: 🍁🍁🍁
I'm giving Born of Night a qualified 3 maple leaves, because despite all the things that annoyed/confused me about this book, I still really enjoyed the ride. There was a plenty of action and romance, with a supporting cast of characters that really made the book for me (Syn. 'Nuff said.)
There were quite a few things that just didn't work for me, though, including (but not limited to) the following:
1) The world building was less than stellar. After 500+ pages, I still have no idea how the Empire works and how the various players are supposed to interact. In order to keep going, I had to essentially trust that people and events in the book were behaving normally for that universe.
2) The inconsistent dialogue. In one sentence, a character would be spouting pretty formal language, and then the next would sound like trailer trash. It was jarring and happened frequently enough to be disruptive.
3) The lazy plot devices. [*spoilers ahoy!!] Example #1: Why on earth would Nykyrian have all those home videos of his childhood torture? And how would they have come into existence in the first place? Example #2: Nykyrian's parents are actually the rulers of a planet and can therefore pardon him for leaving the League? Really? What happened to "No one ever leaves the League alive"? In both cases, things are way too convenient to be credible.
I'll stop there, because I honestly did enjoy the book. It was a one sitting read, and I'll definitely be picking up the next one in the series.
