(Book #1 of the Grigori Legacy series)
Rating: 🍁🍁🍁
I really wanted this book to be awesome. It has so much going for it - a fascinating concept, likeable characters with believable flaws, a female lead who wears sensible clothing, among other things. It's even set in my current hometown, Toronto, so you'd think I could give it four stars. But I can't.
Don't get me wrong, Sins of the Angels is a good read. It's just not a great one. There were a few too many things that didn't come together. [*spoilers ahead!!*] Why, exactly, did Caim keep killing after discovering who the Nephil was? And why did the soulmate connection between Aramael and Alex negate Aramael's ability to sense Caim? Where did that connection come from? One minute, they were driving each other crazy (not it a good way), and a couple of hours later, without knowing anything about each other, they're suddenly linked?
The Toronto setting didn't really work for me, either. Yes, it gets bloody hot here during the summer - she nailed that right on the head - but otherwise, this could have taken place in any other major city. Maybe I've been spoiled by Tanya Huff's Victoria Nelson series, or Chloe Neill's Chicagoland Vampires, with their real, tangible sense of place. Or maybe it's just that I expect more because I live here.
In any case, although I enjoyed the book, I wasn't wowed. I'll probably pick up the next book in the series, just to see what happens to Aramael and Alex, but I'm not in any real rush to do so.
