(Book #2 of the Dust Lands series)
Rating: 🍁🍁🍁
This book was so frustrating, and not always in a good way. My enjoyment of a story is largely character-driven, so it's really hard for me to get on board with a book whose main characters all make me want to smack them for their self-centred stupidity. All of them.
I get that they've been through some majorly traumatizing stuff, and I actually enjoyed the fact that Ms. Young doesn't skim over that fact. Saba, Lugh, Maev, Jack - they are all damaged by the events of Blood Red Road. But damage aside, they all made decisions so far out of character that I struggled to believe them.
Maybe that reflects a lack of imagination on my part. I don't know. What I do know is that the only thing to save the book is the vivid world Ms. Young has created, and the secondary characters who added life and sanity.
I'm not sure it was enough to make me want to keep reading the series, though. We'll see.
