Heart Mate

Heart Mate by Robin D. Owens

(Book #1 of the Celta's Heartmates series)

Overall: Meh. It was entertaining, but kinda confusing and shallow. And the cover art. *shudder*

The Good Stuff:

1) I liked the back story about how Celta came into existence as the accidental colony of Earth's persecuted Celtic magic users. We don't get overwhelmed with history, but are given enough to explain why things are the way they are, like the importance of animals or the emphasis on heart mates.

2) The magic system was also interesting. It came with a price (the ominous "passages"), but was intended for the greater good. I also liked that each person had their own specialization.

3) Zanth the Familiar was my favourite character in the entire book. He's a cat, and he's awesome.

The Not-So-Good Stuff:

1) Can I get a glossary please? There are so many words used that make no sense whatsoever without more context than we're given. Take "septhour", for example. We know that it's a measurement of time, but how much time? Seven hours? 1/7th of an hour? Something else entirely?

2) While I liked the back story and magic system, boy was it presented confusingly. I was able to figure it out, but it shouldn't have been as much work as it was.

3) Both T'Ash and Danith came pretty close to crossing the "too stupid to like" line. Yes, they both had a crap childhood and subsequent legit issues but come on - no one is that neanderthalic (T'Ash) or needlessly obstinate (Danith).
