Unlike the previous installment in this series, Born of Night, the three maple leaves that I'm giving Born of Fire are unqualified. It's a solid read, with (mostly) believable and enjoyable characters, and a plot that keeps you turning the pages to find out what happens next. Ms. Kenyon does a much better job of explaining the story universe this time around, though it's still one of the book's weak points. At least this time I wasn't left wondering why the heck everything was happening.

Syn is by far my favourite character in the series at this point. I think Ms. Kenyon went over the top in how much sh*t she dumped on him, but from what I've read about the author I surmise that this is a common theme for her. Shahara is pretty awesome as well. But you know that "mostly" I stuck in front of the believability of the characters at the beginning of this review? Well, that was because of Shahara. I get that she's had a hard go of it, and doesn't have a lot of reason to trust others, but is she really such an idiot that she never questions the official representation of anyone? Surely as a trained Seax (a title/position which is never really explained, btw) she's expected to search out the truth of a situation before administering the justice that apparently she's responsible for meting out.
