(Book #3 of the Parasol Protectorate series)
Rating: 🍁🍁🍁
This is my least favourite of the series so far. Which is to say that it's awesome, rather than amazingly awesome. The world is still fabulous, the dialogue sharp and witty, and the new characters we meet are just as colourful as the ones we already know. I loved the time spent in Professor Lyall's POV. There are even some surprising developments for one arguably minor character that made the story more enjoyable - who knew Ivy was hiding so much intelligence and business acumen under those awful hats?!
But I missed the dynamic between Alexia and Conall, the latter of whom I wanted to throttle for most of the story. At the end, my desire for violence switched focus to Alexia, who, after spending the first nine-tenths of the book righteously furious with her werewolf husband, forgives him as soon as she sees him. Oh, and he promises to buy her lots of presents.
Really? I'm sorry, Ms. Carriger, I don't care how much she loves him, there should have been some serious groveling going on. And begging. And violence and name-calling.
