(Book #1 of the Revivalist series)
Rating: 🍁🍁🍁🍁
I found this on the shelf at the local library, and thought I'd pick it up for two reasons: 1) it's the first book in the series, which is almost impossible to find sitting on the shelf (they never have book one, I don't know why!); and 2) after reading the back, I was mildly interested by the concept. I'll admit that my expectations were pretty low going in, but I was pleasantly surprised by the depth of thought and complexity of character offered by Caine in this novel.
Working Stiff doesn't suffer from the chick lit element that completely turned me off of Caine's Weather Warden series. In fact, it's rather macabre and deals with elements of free will, death, immortality, medical ethics, and the nature of humanity in an honest and highly entertaining way. The main character, Bryn, is no wilting flower, having just come out of the military. And the whole premise behind how the undead come into existence is one that I've never heard before, so kudos to Ms. Caine for that one!
All in all, it's not a book for the weak of stomach (no real violence gore, just "working with dead people" gore), but if you're looking for an entertaining read with a serious undertone, this is the book for you!
