(Book #1 of the Dark Heavens series)
Rating: 🍁
I really wanted to like this book. The concept is fascinating, and the world Kylie Chan has created is replete with depth, potential, and a wealth of interesting characters. But the writing is just so bloody awful! I made it about 3/4 of the way through and couldn't force myself to sludge through the rest of it. I normally don't have a problem with less-than-stellar writing, but between the endless repetitions, terrible pacing, huge assumptions of reader knowledge and awkward construction, I just couldn't do it.
If it were possible, I'd like to give this book to someone like N. K. Jemisin, or Alison Goodman and have them re-write it. Because the potential for a fantastic story is there. It just needs the right story-teller.
(That being said, Kylie Chan still gets a huge amount of kudos and respect for putting her writing out there and getting it published. I can tell that a lot of work and research went into the creation of this novel. I hate giving bad reviews in circumstances like that.)
