(Book #1 of The Books of Bayern series)
Rating: 🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁
Overall: Beautiful, poignant, powerful. If it's not a classic yet, it should be.
The Good Stuff:
There was so much to love about this book that I'm not quite sure how to start. Let's give it a go.
1) You know how some books instantly transport you to a world so real and compelling and magical that you're immediately immersed in the story to a degree that it becomes part of you? THIS is one of those books.
2) I loved Ani! She was so very real, growing and developing into a strong, competent and powerful person as the story progresses. But she's not without faults, which her friends don't hesitate to call her on.
3) And those friends - in fact, the entire supporting cast of characters - are another wonderful part of the story. None of them seem like artificial story-supporters, if that makes sense. They are all fully developed, independent entities with motivations of their own.
4) The magic system created by Ms. Hale is fascinating!
5) This book is full of lush, rich, beautiful prose that is a joy to read.
The Not-So-Good Stuff:
I honestly can't think of a single thing I didn't like. I kind of wish this book had existed when I was a YA, but because it's so well done it was intensely satisfying regardless.
