If you're a fan of the series like me, then Shield of Winter is definitely worth the read. Lots of stuff happening with the Psynet and the post-Silence Psy society, plus all the other good stuff you've come to expect from Ms. Singh.

BUT! This is probably the worst installment of the series in terms of editing and/or plot focus. There were at least two distinct moments as I was reading that I had to stop and flip back to see if I'd accidentally skipped something important. I hadn't. It was almost like a chunk of text had been chopped out without any new transition being added to make sure the edges of the story still connected. Very disorienting.

Also, there were far too many little sub-plots going on that seemed unnecessary - most notably Ming's attempt to Jax Vasic to the max (sorry! I couldn't resist!), and the whole "death by gauntlet" thing. Neither added anything to the plot as a whole. Instead, they took up way too much space that might have been better used to connect the gaping plot holes.

And yet I really enjoyed the book. The Psy-Changeling world is a fascinating one filled with great characters, and there's still so much potential to be explored. I can't wait for the next installment!
