For the most part I enjoyed this. I'm not entirely sure why.

The world was beautifully portrayed, though the book would have benefitted by front-loading the explanations a bit more. I had no idea what a tairen was until two-thirds of the way through the book, for example. Still, there's enough info to follow the story, which I suppose is sufficient.

The cast of characters were well crafted. It was very easy to respond as appropriate to the various people - I loved the heroine*, my heart wept for the hero, I had mixed feelings about the Queen (can't tell you why without spoilers), and so on. Nothing truly original, but well executed nonetheless.

That asterisk after "heroine" in the previous paragraph? It's because despite the assertion that Elysetta is something special, she never actually does anything. In fact, nothing of any significance actually happens in this novel other than that Elysetta and Rain meet and start the whole formal courtship process. [Edit: After reading some other reviews, this is apparently because the first two books in the series are meant to be read together. That makes sense, since Lord of the Fading Lands on its own feels incomplete.]

Also, I kind of skimmed all the parts with the Dark Mages. And it didn't seem to really matter to the story.

Still, it was ultimately enjoyable. The love story between Elysetta and Rain is entertaining, and the writing is good. I'll definitely be picking up the next one in the series!
