An intricate, believable world full of complex, believable characters. Plus steampunk. Plus victoriana. Plus vampires. Plus werewolves. Plus romance. Plus, plus, plus...you get the idea. There's a whole lot packed into this story, and overall it's done rather well.
It's tone is a little dark and a little gritty, but there's lots of excitement and action to keep it from getting lost in the shadows. The pacing of the plot could be a little better - the story plods a bit in some places (not unusual in the first book of a series as the author works to construct the world), and then rushes through scenes with mind-boggling speed in others.
Still, a solid read. I'll definitely be continuing on with the series.
