(Book #1 of the Sookie Stackhouse series)
Rating: πππ
I've been avoiding this series, partly because I made the mistake of starting to watch the HBO version (which I seriously disliked), and partly because it just seemed a little too chick-litish. I finally gave in and read it yesterday, and am still feeling kind of ambivalent about it.
The Good Stuff:
1) I've never been to the South of my Neighbours to the South, but reading this book made me feel like I have. The sense of place was very real and compelling.
2) I like the fact the Bill isn't the most dominant vampire in the area. This added to the danger by making it seem like something really could have happened to Sookie, despite all Bill's efforts to protect her.
The Not-So-Good Stuff:
1) Sookie. I can't make up my mind about whether she's TSL, or just tragically naΓ―ve. I get that she's strong, and supposedly intelligent, but she just comes across as way too...what's the word? Gullible? Willfully ignorant?
2) The Bill/Sookie relationship. I don't have anything against them having a relationship, but I really didn't like how they came together. I mean, Sookie knows absolutely nothing about Bill. Despite how "refreshing" that may be for someone who can read minds, I'd still want to know a little more about a person (dead or otherwise) before knocking boots, you know?
I'll probably continue with the series, but based on what I've read so far I don't have high hopes.
