Have you read the Mortal Instruments series? Take the same characters and the basic plot, stick them in Victorian England, throw in some inconsistently applied period misogyny, add a touch of steampunk, and this is what you end up with.
I would have found it more entertaining if I didn't have to keep reminding myself that it was taking place in the past. Ms. Clare totally drops the ball on the 'historical' setting.
